Dear Parents,

Next Monday, our physical education class will be starting a new unit.We will begin volleyball. This unit will cover the skills of volleyball as well as defense and attacking as a team. The general learner outcomes will focus on the student learning the different aspects of the game of volleyball, as well as some basic terminology. The focus of this unit is to make the students better individual volleyball players as well as working as a team to play a game of volleyball.

The way your son or daughter will be graded resembles the grading system from the last unit. They will receive 2 points for being on time and ready to participate. This means they are properly dressed down and ready to begin activity 5 minutes after the bell rings. Tardiness or being unprepared will result in a loss of 1-2 points.Points will also result from displaying a positive attitude. Two points will be awarded for interacting with others, being a leader, and the use of appropriate language (i.e. no swearing or putdowns).Using the equipment and PE facilities respectfully will gain the student 1 point.Safety is taken seriously in the physical education setting and the students will be rewarded for helping make the class safe.

The rules have not changed all year and the students are expected to continue following them. They are as follows:

ØRespect fellow classmates and demonstrate good sportsmanship

ØPerform activity as instructed by the teacher

ØEveryone gives their best effort everyday

For following these rules, the student will be given 1 point. Please go over these rules again with your son or daughter so there is no question about what is expected of them.

Next, 3 points will be awarded for the studentís effort. They need to be on task at all times, involved during activity time, giving their best, and applying what they have learned in previous lessons be it concepts and strategies or motor skills. The student is expected use and tie together what they have learned.

Lastly, the students have a new assignment for this unit. They are going to be writing in a journal about what they are learning in class, future fitness goals, activities they participate in outside of class. These will be turned in every Friday after class and given 1 point for each entry for a total of 5 points.

If you have any questions regarding the upcoming volleyball unit, do not hesitate to call.

Thank you,
