Topic: The basic needs to survive.

Concept: What it means to survive

Skill:  Brainstorm on different situations and what can be done.

Objective:  To establish an understanding of basic essential life dependant needs.

Lesson Activity: In groups of 4-5, 3X5 cards stating survival situations.

    Class discussion of various types of survival situations. All students will recieve a 3X5 card which designates an area that they will be lost in describing weather and climate conditions and describe their survival situation (plane crash, lost, car accident, hiking and caught in a storm, etc.) and materials they have with them. One student will be injured in some way from the accident. Students will discuss how to help the injured person using the items they have. Then they will have to plan on being in the wilderness for an unknown period of time. They must think and plan how they will meet the basic needs of their group. Once the groups are done with their brainstorming, there will be a chance to share their ideas with the rest of the class.

Diagnostic Assessment:  Through discussion, find out if they know what the basic needs are and how to obtain them in the wilderness.

Formative Assessment:  Circulate amongst groups to assess decision making process in terms of the ideas that the group is discussing.

Summative Assessment:  Students will present their ideas to the class for a discussion on the pro's and con's of their survival situation solutions..

Grading:  A plus, check, or minus will be entered in the grade book depending on the participation in the discussions.
(This could be approached as a cooperative learning activity where all of the group members grade the input of each member
of the group.)
