Lesson plan #3

Topic: Shelter Essentials

Concept: Relate components of a good campsite.

Skill:  Determine types of shelters and natural materials needed for building possibilities.

Objective:  Students will be able to identify shelter types, natural materials to build shelters and proper location sites.

Lesson Activity:  (materials: string/rope and a tarp of any sort)

Student's will view a brief video about "survival situation" campsite locations, how to find shelter in the woods and how to make one out of natures materials. A brief activity will follow where students write down as many ways to protect themselves from the environment as possible, including hand or nature made. This will be followed by a brief discussion. Students will then participate in an activity where they will build a shelter using a few minimal supplies. Outside or at the local park groups of 3-5 students will locate and build a shelter in the best place possible. Once completed each shelter will be examined for location choice, ability to resist the elements, size and protection it provides. The examination will lead to a group discussion about what was done well, what could be done next time and other ideas about shelter construction.

Formative Assessment: How many types of shelters can students come up with?  How do these relate to the
types of shelters found in the wilderness?

Summative Assessment: Discussion about ways the shelter should provide for protection.

Grading:  Again, a participation grade for the day as in lesson 1.
