Topic: Why do we need survival?
Concept: So that we may survive unpredicted "survival situations".
Skill: Knowledge of basic needs for traveling in the wilderness whether it is in a car, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, etc.
Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of basic materials needed when on these excursions.
Lesson Activity:
Provide the students with a brief introduction
to the reasons behind survival situations. Discuss that they are basically
not planned or predicted but accidents that can happen to anyone at anytime.
Introduce the 13 essentials, quiz the students in pairs or groups towards
the end of the period.
Another, slightly more active, activity is to have the whole class line up in two or three lines or sit in groups. Then have them each take a turn at naming one of the 13 essentials. Give them no more than 10 seconds each and the first group to get all 13 recieves candy or points and the other groups recieve the same but less in amount or quantity. There must be a judge at the front of each line timing the students and writing their answers. If students answer incorrectly they go to the back of the line and if students answer correctly they help the judge. This lesson will help to prepare the student with the knowledge of the essentials so important in survival.
Assessment: 1. How knowledgeable are the
students about survival situations and the possibility of them being in
one?
2. Are the students able to collaborate and come up with the correct 13
essentials?
Grading: Participation will be noted in the grade book with a plus, check, or minus. The points that are accumulated will be noted also. The first group to complete the task will recieve 5 points for each student and the second group will recieve 4 points each and the last group of students will recieve 3 points each.
