Springboard Diving Course Outline

Class Overview and Introduction:

        An introduction to beginning diving including proper technique and safety factors, using both the one and
        three meter diving boards. It will include forward, backward, reverse, inward & categories.

        Specific Learner Outcomes
      Students shall be able to:
        o       Help the student gain a knowledge of the mechanics of diving
        o       Familiarize the diver with the forward and backward approach
        o       Familiarize the diver with the common faults related to the various aspects of diving
        o       Introduce the use and care of equipment
        o       Introduce the safety, scoring, terminology and judging of diving

         Course Topics
      The topics to be included are:
        o       Equipment
        o       The fundamentals of diving
        o       Categories of diving
        o       Beginning dives at one meter
        o       Intermediate dives at one meter
        o       Safety and accident prevention
        o       Terminology, scoring and judging

        Instruction Methods and Activities
      Methods and activities for instruction include:
        o       Demonstration
        o       Videotapes

 


Rationale:
Diving combines physical and mental skills that will serve the students well throughout their lives.  Diving skills give a person independence and provide a foundation for safe participation in other water activities.  Although the objective of diving is to learn new dives, there is always an enjoyment of just being in the water.  Diving is a fun lifetime sport for people of all fitness levels.  Participation is a factor that will be stressed in this and every unit.


Student Learning Objectives:
This unit is designed to meet the  Essential Academic Learning Requirements in Health and Fitness.  After completing this unit, the student will:


Assessment:
 
Skill Competencies Development 30%
Knowledge and Application (exams and quizzes)  20%
Attendance and Participation 30%
Social Development (see below) 20%

Skill Competencies Development includes task cards that are to be completed 1-3 days after a skill was learned.  Each student will be responsible for completing the required task cards.
 

Knowledge and Application includes a final exam of all the knowledge needed to dive safely.
 

Social Development includes: attitude, cooperation with teacher and students, leadership abilities, and following directions.


Grading:
90-100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
less than 59% = retake
