Purpose of the Course:

The purpose of this course is for you to apply these things when you play sports.

“A competent sportsperson - sufficient skills and knowledge to participate successfully
“A literate sportsperson - understands rules, traditions, and rituals - becomes a discerning consumer
“An enthusiastic sportsperson - behaves appropriately to preserve, protect, and enhance the culture of sport

 Course Objectives:

Successful completion of this class will require that you demonstrate:

1.      Develop skills and fitness specific to a particular sport.

2.      Appreciate and be able to execute strategic play.

3.      Participate at a level appropriate to one¹s developmental stage.

4.      Share in the planning and administration of sport experience.

5.      Provide reasonable leadership.

6.      Work effectively within a group toward common goals.

7.      Appreciate the rituals and conventions that give particular sports their unique meanings.

8.      Develop the capacity to make reasoned decisions about sport issues.

Course Format and Evaluation

Your grade will be based on the extent to which you meet the following requirements:

·          Self evaluation (15 pts)

·          Written response about your responsibility as coach, ref. etc. (20 pts)

·          Peer evaluations (5 pts)

·          Teacher evaluations (5 pts)

·          Participation daily (10 pts)

·          Attendance (5 pts)

Professionalism

Regular attendance at every class is expected.  During classes, attendance will be taken at precisely when the bell rings.  You are expected to be present and ready for activity at this time.  Walking out to the field does not count as ready!  Because we may sometimes meet in the gym you must always bring appropriate footwear for inside and outside.  Any absence will be recorded and you will lose 5 attendance points except in unusually (and previously discussed) extenuating circumstances.  Tardies will result in a reduction of attendance points.

During classes we expect you to dress and act in a way appropriate for a student in a public school physical education class.  Because of the sport education approach there may be variations in your dress depending on your responsibilities but professionalism is expected.  Hats, gum, jeans and the like are out.  If in doubt ask me!  When teaching the Soccer Activity Class or KVJSA Team you are to present yourself as a professional physical educator.
