TO HAVE THE STUDENTS PREPARE FOR ENTRY INTO THE KAYAK SAFELY AND COOPERATIVELY.

*Water Relays
Students huddle up around teacher on pool deck. Strong swimmers stay in deep end.
Weak swimmers stay in shallow end.
SETT - Lesson on entry/exit of kayak. Students gather around teacher at shallow end of pool. Safety is our number one concern.
Entry

Have boats out into water before students arrive.
 

Have students pair up.
 

Pass out life jackets to all 
students.
 

Have students go to a kayak and stand poolside near it.

Make sure all students can see and hear teacher.

 

1.  Ease boat into pool parallel to edge of pool not too far away.
2.  Lay paddle across both boat and bank so that middle of its shaft goes across boat just behind the rear of the cockpit and the near blade is flat on the ground.
3.  Grasp both the paddle and the rear of the cockpit with your right hand, holding the two firmly together.
4.  Facing the front of  the boat and reaching behind you, grasp the paddle shaft with yoiur other (left) hand, and use the braced paddle as a kind of handrail to support yourself while you put first your right leg, then left, into the boat and wiggle yourself sown into the seat.
4.  Next, feel with yoiur feet for the foot pegs.
5.  Now you are ready to snap the spray skirt into place over the cockpit rim and paddle away.

Reverse the steps of getting in, putting your paddle behind the cockpit and bracing it as a kind of handrail to steady the boat while you get out.
