Course Description and Philosophy:

The purpose of this Salmon Fishing Unit is to prepare you with the "knowledge and skills" of salmon fishing. As students, you will be exposed to a variety of styles and philosophies, I expect each of you to take your own knowledge and experience and incorporate them into the teachings.

After completion of this course, I hope to give each of you a sense of what Salmon Fishing consists of and give you the ability to plan and take a fishing trip on your own!! Hopefully you will be able to bring home the  "BIG ONE."

We will not be using a text for this unit, but you will be given several handouts and expected to compile a resource file of your own. This is a very exciting unit and I hope that each of you will enjoy our lessons!

Course Objectives:
Successful completion of this unit will require that you demonstrate:

1. Personal proficiency in performing various fishing skills.

2. An understanding of various equipment needed for successful salmon fishing.

3. Knowledge of salmon life cycles, species and other salmon facts.

4. Completion of a preservation project.

5. The ability to compile and organize a salmon fishing resource file.

6. Professionalism during field trips and guest speakers.

Course format and Evaluation:

Classes will include practical lessons, mini lectures,guest speakers,  and discussions, along with two field trips. Your grade will be based on the extent to which you meet the following requirements:

1. Attendance (20 Points)
    * You are expected to be in class, dressed appropriately ( PE Clothing) each day
    * Failure to attend will result in 3 point deduction for each day missed on your final grade

2. Written Test on Fishing Equipment ( 15 Points)
    * Rods......5 Points
    * Reels.....5 Points
    * Lures.....5 Points
 

3. Written Test on Protecting Salmon (10 Points)
    * What your role is in the protection plan

4. Power Point Presentation or Web Page Development (40 Points)
Each of you will have the opportunity to develop a presentation on some aspect of salmon (life cycle, species, etc.) You need to clear the topic with at least three weeks before the due date. This needs to be 5-10 minutes long and detailed. A scoring rubric is posted.

5.  Salmon Fishing Resource File (30 Points)
You will have the opportunity to share your salmon fishing resource file with me towards the end of the unit. Your materials should be logically organized and neatly presented. You will receive a grade based on the appearance and content of your file. A scoring rubric is posted.

There is a total of 115 Points possible for this Salmon Fishing Unit. Below is a breakdown of grades:

92% ~ A
83% ~ B
70% ~ C

I do not give anything below a "C" grade, if you are below this mark I will schedule a meeting with you and your parents or guardians and we will work this out.

Professionalism:

During classes with me I expect you to dress and act in a way appropriate for our school. When we go on field trips remember that you are representing our school so I expect each of you to act like adults.
