Topic:

-Introduction to sailing and getting started
 

Objective:

-Students will learn the beginning steps to starting to sail.
 

Skill:

-Understranding the no sail zone, closed hauled, beam reach, and running
 

Equipment:

-large peices of paper, pens and pencils
 

Lesson Activity:

 I. Introduction on how to start your sailing adventure.

   A. Teach about the sail and no sail zones.

   B. Explain  Lufting

     1.  Lufting- when your boat is in the no sail zone and the wind is coming strait into the wind.

   C.  Expain closed haul

     1.  Close haul-  This is when your bow is closes to the wind before it starts to luff.

   D.  Explain beam reach

     1.  Beam reach-  Blowing directly over the side of the boat at 90 degrees.

   E.  Explain Running.

     1.  Running- When the wind is coming from the behind.

   F.  Have the students create their own diagram

     1.  Get students into different groups and have then create their own diagram.
 

Review

-Gather students around instructor. Pretend that they are a boat and if the head is the bow and the wind is coming in a certain direction.
 

Assessment:

-Direction calls by the students at the end of the class period.
