Daily Lesson 1









Topic:

-Introduction to sailing and getting to know the boat.
 

Objective:

-Students will learn the different parts of a sail boat and get a basic introduction to sailing.
 

Skill:

-Understranding which way the wind is blowing and memorization.
 

Equipment:

-Boat models one for every three people
 

Lesson Activity:

 I. Introduction to sailing.

   A. Benefits of sailing.

   B. Parts of the sail boat.

     1.  Present the class with a picture of a sailboat.

       a.  Hand out a sheet of paper without the names and ask the students to fill in the blanks.
       b.  Ask each student to name two parts of a sailboat without looking at their paper.

     2.  Split the class into groups of three use a task card.

       a.  Each student will be given a model of a sailboat.
       b.  One student will point to the different parts of the sailboat while the other student answers.

   C.  Which way is the wind coming from.

       a.  Look to see what the wind does to flags, trees, smoke, and your hair.
       b.  If the wind is barely blowing see where the birds are perched they always face the wind.
       c.  Look at the water wind creates ripples which make the water darker.

   D.  Take a trip outside and see which way the wind is blowing.
 
 

Review:

-Gather students around instructor. Ask them to name one part that is usually found on the stern (backside of the boat).
 

Assessment:

-Do students understand how to fi8nd which way the wind is blowing?

Give students question sheet.
