Class Overview and Instruction: This five week white water rafting class is oriented towards 8th grade students. It was developed as an alternative to traditional PE activities such as badmitton and dodgeball. This class will teach students the fundamentals of white water rafting. They will not only aquire rafting techniques that will enable them to raft successfully, they will also learn safety and the necessary terminology. The class will consist of two classroom instruction days, two class 1 river expeditions, and a final class 2 river trip.
Rational: White water rafting will give students the opportunity to experience a new sport. It is an activity that many students have never tried before. It is both a physically and mentally challenging sport that requires participants to work as a team. Rafting also brings students out of their normal environment of classroom and gym activities. It throws them into the great outdoors to experience nature as they may never have experienced it before.
