Overview of Orienteering Lessons
A. Topic:  Orienteering

Concepts: Map and Compass; Land navigation

Skills: Navigate on land using map and compass separately and in tandem.

 B.  Rationale:
Students will want to learn to navigate with map and compass because they are interested in claiming independence.

Students need to learn to navigate with map and compass because it is a building block for the pursuit of many outdoor lifetime hobbies.  Many students live in an area where there are abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation in which they need to know how to find their way to prevent becoming lost.

Navigation using map and compass can be connected with, transferred to, or integrated with math skills, geography (social studies), and daily living skills.

C.  Unit Goal:  Students will have the knowledge to use topographical maps and a compass for land navigation purposes.
