Orienteering Lesson 8

Topic: Map and Compass

Concept: Using map and compass together

Skill: Determine direction of travel and distance with a map and compass.

Objective: Students will be able to line up their compass with their route on a map, and use the map scale to determine distance.

Lesson Activity: (materials needed: maps, compasses, worksheet with imaginary trip destinations.)

Begin class with a discussion of why we need to combine the previous concepts we have learned about maps and compasses in order to navigate with certainty.  Through discussion, see if they can figure out how to use the compass on the map to determine direction between two points.  Each pair of students will have a map and a compass.  Lead them through several practice exercises in setting the compass on the map.  Each pair of students will be given a map with several destinations marked in a specific order.  They will complete a worksheet with the direction and distance information for the imaginary trip.  The ones who complete this exercise will make up their own imaginary trip complete with directions and distances.  If time permits, the students will lead their classmates on the journey.  Wrap up with discussion about the correct techniques to use for setting their compass to their map.

Diagnostic Assessment: Find out what the students know about combining their map and compass skills.

Formative Assessment: Check on student understanding by evaluating their work in progress on the imaginary trip.

Summative Assessment: Check for understanding by leading a discussion.  Evaluate worksheets.

Grading:  Participation.  The imaginary trip worksheet will be worth 25 points.  25 points extra credit for creating a personal imaginary trip.  (Can be completed as homework.)
