Orienteering Lesson 10

Topic: Orienteering

Concept: Putting it all together!  Using map and compass in tandem to navigate through a prescribed course.

Skill: Orienteering!  Locate course controls on the map and navigate using map and compass to each control.

Objective: Students will learn the steps necessary to navigate their way through an orienteering course.

Lesson Activities: (materials needed: course maps, compasses, control cards and pencils.  Before class design and lay out the course on the school grounds.)

Begin with a class discussion of the orienteering rules which were previously assigned for homework.  Through  class discussion, determine the steps to follow when navigating through a set course.  After the discussion, hand out a note card to each student with the prescribed steps.  Have students quiz their partner on the steps.  Now it's time to head outside to the practice orienteering course.  Make sure each student has a map, a compass, a control card and a pencil.  The students will work alone on the course, leaving the start at 30 second intervals.  The practice compass courses will still be set up on the field and waiting students (and those who finish the course) will be directed to practice their compass skills on the school yard compass game or the compass competition course which will still be set up from lesson 7.  When the students finish the course, they will turn in their control card.

Diagnostic Assessment: Check for understanding of rules for orienteering events.  How well are students able to think through the necessary steps for navigating an orienteering course?

Formative Assessment: Are students able to remember the steps involved when they are quizzed by their partner?  Are they able to apply the steps while navigating the course?

Summative Assessment: How successful were the students in navigating the practice course?

Grading:  Participation.  The control card will be worth 25 points.

It is likely that there won't be time for everyone to complete the course on the first day, so time will be set aside for students to finish the next day.  Other practice stations will be designed which will engage the early finishers in practicing their map and compass skills.
