For this activity, I will place about a dozen markers on the ground around the field. These markers will be lettered or numbered. I plan to use a small stake with the marker attached to it. (By the way, I heard a great way to get signs like this for your use. After election season when all of those placards are lining the road, help clean up your town by picking them up!! If you turn the sign inside out, you will have two blank pages on which to write along with a ready made stake.) I will place other markers with the same letters or numbers (large enough to be read form a distance) about chest height on trees, walls, goalposts, etc. Before class, I will determine the bearing between each spot marked on the ground and its respective chest height sign. I will also make a blank worksheet for the students to fill out (a 4x6 card is better than paper).
Example worksheet:
Name: _______________________
| Marker Letter | Description of Bearing Location | Bearing in degrees |
| A | Goal Post at far end of field | 143 |
| B | Door to gym | 350 |
| C | Light standard at N end of lot | 275 |
| D | Tree at W edge of field | 38 |
