Nature Hike Outline

Course Objectives: This unit is designed to integrate nature in with physical education and the environment.  It is a unit that everyone can be involved in at any ages and grade levels.
    Hiking can be integrated into educational programs as both a physical activity and a leisure activity.  It is an activity which can be altered for different intensities and ages.  Hiking is an avtivity that can be performed throughout a lifetime, therefore the introduction of hiking into the school systems is very important.
    Through this unit many subjects can integrated such as science and the environment, history, art and much more.  This is something we are teaching as a fun activity to encourage hiking outside of class.  We don't want to make it too boring, or too hard.  In this Unit we will be learning the basic important points to take with you into the outdoors.  We will concentrate on a different aspect of hiking each session and then integrate them all into one day hike at the end of the unit.

Learning Objectives:
1. Students should be able to demonstrate profiency in proper trail finding and expres reasons for staying on trails.
2. Students should be able to identify a variety of natural wildlife.
3. Students should be able to administer minor first aid to one's self or another.
4. Students should be able to name and identify the 13 essentials for hiking in the outdoors.
5. Students should be able to demonstrate safety procedures in case one gets lost or into trouble.

Essential Academic Learning:
    This unit is designed to meet classroom academic learning requirements as well as physical education academic learning requirements.  Along with many other learning requirements, students will meet the following:
1. Acquire skills to live safely.
2. Incorporate rules and safety procedures into physical activity.
3. Understand how environmental factors affect one's health.
4. Use listening and observation skills to gain understanding.

Assessment
Daily grades will be determined by:
Attendance  25%
Active and Cooperative participation 25%
Completion of tasks  25%
Final Assignment  25%

Any absences need to be pre-arranged and an alternative arrangement will be made.

Grading:
90-100  = A
80-89    = B
70-79    =C
60-69    =D
< 59%    = F

In case of failing grades extra credit assignments can be discusses with the teacher.
