Popping a Wheelie

Popping
a wheelie can help the rider in many ways. Getting the front tire off the
ground helps when riding over logs, curbs, rocks, and preventing a headfirst
launch over the handlebars when going over a drop-off.
1. In a
gear that is not to high or not to low, start pedaling in a straight line.
2.
Slide your rear end back off the saddle a bit.
3. Test
to see how much effort it takes to raise your front wheel by pulling up on the handlebars.
Keep pedaling.
4.
Using the strong leg (dominant), give a hard pedal stroke on that side.
5. Pull
on the handlebars as the pedal stroke lifts the front wheel.
6. As the
handlebars are lifted, turn them slightly to one side. Keep your balance
by shifting your knees in and out and side to side.
Cues
1. Do not be afraid to "go for it!"
2. Pedal smoothly in a straight line.
3. Give a hard pedal stroke with the dominant leg.
4. Pull up on handlebars, turning them slightly to one side.
