The Art of Falling

Objectives

Student Objectives:
1.  The students will demonstrate how to tuck and roll.
2.  The  students will understand why they are to tuck and roll.

Teacher Objectives:
1.  Do not allow anyone to ride without a helmet and pads.
2.  Give the students plenty of practice time.
3.  Keep the class on task and safe.

Equipment:
Bicycles, helmets, and pads.  A soft field or hill that would not be too hard to land on.  Plenty of open space. Encourage the class to wear gloves.

Instant Activity:
Snail Race

Set Induction:
has any one ever crashed on their bicycle before.  Well, in this mountain biking unit some of us will crash.  In order to not get injured there is a correct way to fall.  Most importantly think like a ball, tuck and roll.

Task:
First of all no one ride without a helmet.  You also may want to wear gloves.
 1.  Odds are if a person rides a lot sooner or later they will crash.  When there is a crash be sure you get rid of the bike.  Most injuries occur when the body get entangled with the bike.  Let the bike move forward, or leave it behind.
2.  Think like a ball when you hit the ground.  Assume the tuck position the best you can.  Bring the arms in toward the chest.  Do not brace the fall by sticking hands out, it often causes broken wrists and arms.
3.  Roll after you hit and tuck. Hit, tuck, and roll.  The rolling action decreases the friction that could cause abrasions arms and legs.

Note: It may be a good idea to practice the tuck and roll out in a soft grassy area and without bikes.  As the students get comfortable, those who chose to may practice a few mock crashes with the bike.  Be sure that the students are not practicing this technique at top speed.  the students should be riding fairly slow.

Refinements/cues:
1.  Bring Helmet
2.  Ditch the bike
3.  Think like a ball
4.  Pull in the arms and hands
5.  Tuck and roll

Challenge:
Do not get hurt
How many tuck and rolls can you do?
