Holding the Stick
Right Handers
-
Left hand, with palm facing down, goes on end of stick

Right hand, with palm facing up, is placed about 12 inches from the left
hand

Both hands are in front of the hips or slightly outside them

Beginners may grasp the stick with the right hand closer to the head of
the stick for control purposes

Fingers hold the stick firm, but not tight
-
Thumbs of both hands lie flat against the shaft of the stick
Left Handers same directions, only in reverse
Cradling
-
Keep the upper hand and wrist loose
-
Keep a loose grip on the lower hand to allow movement of the stick

Move both of the arms as well as the hands for control

Swing the stick from shoulder to shoulder
-
Beginners look at the ball when cradling

Use your wrist to snap the head of the stick behind the ball
Throwing
-
Turn non-throwing shoulder towards target

Stagger the feet about shoulder width apart

Upper hand is even with the shoulders and controls the stick

Place lower hand about 6-8 in. from the body

Hold the stick at a 45 degree angle with the head facing the direction
of the throw

Draw body weight to the rear leg and then transfer it to the front leg
smoothly

Upper body turns form a side position to one facing the target

Upper hand draws back, follows with wrist snap action

Lower arm is bent at the elbow

Lower hand Pulls down on end of the handle

The stick ends up pointing at the target
Catching
-
Square upper body toward the flight path of the ball

Keep feet shoulder width apart

Place the stick slightly above the head as a target for a pass

Make sure the pocket on the stick completely faces the ball

Make the catch in front of the body with the stick reaching out for the
ball

Cushion the ball into the pocket by bringing the head of the stick back
toward the body
Scooping
-
Bend the knees and upper body into a semicrouch position
-
For right handers, the right foot is forward, vs. for left handers
-
The left arm determines the angle of the scoop, which is a variable for
each player
-
Hold the end of the handle to the side of the body, rather than in front
-
The head of the stick hits the ground 1-2 in. from the pall
-
Keep your eyes on the ball until you have completed the scoop with a shovel-like
motion
-
Scooping should take place with both hands on the stick
