Clothing

Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to know and understand what types or articles of clothes they need to take with them.  The weather and season will help them decide what to pack to take with them on the hike.

Instant Activity: Paper or Plastic?
Grade Level: 4th and Up
Equipment: Cones for general space, plastic grocery bags
Directions:
Have each child get a plastic grocery bag as they enter your class. Then have them find a partner and a safe space in the playing area. They are to stand facing their partner approximately 4 feet away from each other.
On the teachers signal, both partners toss their bag into the air by throwing the bags into the air using both handles (thereby causing the bag to fill with air and float to the ground). Their job is to move in a predetermined way by their teacher (i.e., walking, galloping, skipping, etc.) and catch each others bag before it hits the ground.
If they are successful then they start again but this time they must each take a step back from where they originally started (may want to have them mark on the floor or ground where they first started from). The challenge is to see how far apart the students can get and still be able to run and catch each others bags before they touch the ground. If you have odd numbers groups of three will work fine. Please follow the Safety Tips below for successful playing of this activity!
Safety Tips
DO NOT allow students to put the bags over their heads!
Tell your students to keep their eyes up while they are moving towards the bag. If they don't you may have students
run into each other.
Have both students toss the bag up on either their right or left sides of their bodies (i.e., I would toss mine up on the
left side and so would my partner). This should make a clearer path to catch the bag.
Encourage students to stay on their feet at all times (i.e., no diving).

Lesson:
    * winter clothes.
    * spring clothes
    * summer clothes
    * fall clothes
    * clothes for all occasions
    * extra clothes

Instruction to class:
    The season will help you decide what clothes to pack with you one your hike.  But more importantly the weather is the major deciding factor.  Each season has its own basic weather characteristics, but checking out the predicted forecast is also important.
In the winter you should wear a basic layer of poly pro or other wicking material to pull the moisture from sweat away from your skin to help keep you warm.  Depending on your speed you may also wear a layer of fleece which will help insulate you.  This insulated layer will only help if there is no wind or rain.  If these conditions exist then it is a necessity that you have a shell on to protect against these elements.  Gortex, or any other wind and rain blocking material is appropriate.  Hat and gloves are a must.  You can lose a lot of your body heat through the top of your head.  If you are out in the snow then gators are also a must to keep the snow out of your boots.  Helping to keep your socks dry and warm.
During the spring when the weather is warming up it is important that you bring along warm clothes, since it can cool off very quickly.  Clothes to be worn while hiking are the same.  In the later spring it may not be necessary to wear as many while hiking, but is a good idea to bring them along for extra clothes.
Summer weather allows for less clothing needed.  But don't forget that extra clothes are always to be packed, just in case.  Shorts can be worn on your bottom, and the poly pro layer doesn't need to be worn or you may get too hot.  Sunscreen is a good thing to always take with you.  The intensity of the sun is much greater at higher elevations.
When fall comes around the weather begins to cool off more and those warm layers need to be brought back out to wear or bring along for when the conditions change.  A hat and a pair of gloves are important articles to be packed.  Your fleece layers are going to come in handy when you summit and sit for a while, or just during a break on the side of a trail.  Your poly pro bottoms may also be needed in cooler mornings or later evenings.
    There are some clothes that need to be taken along in all conditions and seasons.  These include socks, along with extras, a wind or rain jacket, poly pro top and bottom, a fleece vest or coat, hat and gloves.  Extra clothes may include socks and a shirt and shorts.

Assessment: The students will be given a hand out of each season and condition.  They will need to write in the proper clothing that should be taken to ensure a safe and warm hike.

Equipment:  I will bring in some pieces of clothing that I wear while I hike so they can get an idea about what I am talking about in class.

Class rules and consequences:
    First offense: verbal warning
    Second offense: sit out or sent out of the room until teacher can go and talk with student about their disruptive behavior.
