Floor Exercises

1.    Forward Roll-Cues) Raise hips, tuck head, round back, knees straight after feet push off mat, tuck tight to complete roll.
(Spotting) Tuck head with one hand, other lifts hips up and over; as a gymnast completes roll, grasp hips with both hands and assist to stand.

2.    Backward Roll-(Cues) From standing position sit down and extend right arm out to side, focus on the hand of that arm as hips are lifted upward toward the right and over the right shoulder; left leg extends and right knee bends, end in a knee scale with the left knee extended
(Spotting) Grasp gymnast at the hips and lift hips up and over.

3.     Tripod-(Cues) Place hands and head on mat to form a triangle base of support, place knees on elbows, maintain balance; then, straighten back and lift knees slightly off the elbows and continue to balance with the hips and knees still flexed.
(Spotting) Squat to side and slightly behind gymnast, support hips with one hand and use other to help lift legs to knee position if necessary.

4.    Headstand-(Cues) Assume tripod position and when balanced, extend legs upward, point toes and keep feet together.
(Spotting) Use one hand to support the gymnast behind the hips and the other to help lift the legs up.

5.    Handstand-(Cues) From standing position bend forward to place hands shoulder width apart on mat, fingers pointing forward, while at same time kicking one leg upward toward vertical, just before it reaches the vertical position, push off mat with second leg and bring it together with the first leg, extend entire body upward.
(Spotting) Stand in front of gymnast and as he/she kicks upward, place shin or thigh of right leg against right shoulder of gymnast, grasp gymnast's hips with both hands and lift upward to stretch gymnast completely.

6.    Cartwheel-(Cues) Begin in standing position facing direction of movement, bend hips to place first hand on mat while lifting opposite leg upward; as second hand reaches for mat, push off with second foot; legs should pass vertically overhead in wide straddle, stretch upward in rib cage; place first foot on mat as first hand leaves mat, push off mat with second hand and lift trunk upward to standing position.
(Spotting) Stand at backside of gymnast and support at hips throughout cartwheel.

7.    Roundoff-(Cues) From a running approach thrust arms from an overhead position downward to mat while beginning to execute a 1/4 turn, first hand should be placed with fingers pointing as if doing a cartwheel, second hand should be placed with fingers pointing more toward the direction of approach, hips should complete another 1/4 turn with the feet passing overhead and together as turn is completed.
(Spotting) Spotter steps in behind gymnast to block the gymnast's hops during the landing and rebound.

8.    Front Walkover-(Cues) From standing position kick into a handstand position with the legs maintaining a 180 degree split; stretch in the shoulders and rib cage during the handstand, keep head extended back; place lead foot on mat as close to hands as possible, as lead foot touches mat, push upper body off mat wit hands, keeping head back and arms trailing.
(Spotting) Grasp gymnast's upper arm with one hand as gymnast places hands on the mat, support gymnast's back with the other as the legs drop overhead, help lift gymnast to standing position if necessary; two spotters

9.    Handspring-(Cues) From a running approach arms are thrust from an overhead position to the mat, place hands on mat so that shoulder angles are completely extended, lead leg thrusts upward and drive leg follows, body to handstand position; as legs come together and begin to rotate just beyond the vertical, shoulders thrust off mat, head is back, arms trail body;, hips up; land in beginners squat or layout landing.
(Spotting) Two spotters standing to the side and out in front of gymnast ready to move with gymnast to be in correct position when gymnast places hands for handspring; as gymnast places hands on the mat, spotters grasp gymnast's upper arms with near hand and support the back with the other hand.

Balance Beam

1.    Side Straddle Mount-(Cues) From a side stand front place hands on each side of beam, lift one leg in an extended position over the beam while turning the body 1/4 turn to face end of beam, end by supporting weight on hands with legs straddling weight on hands with legs straddling beam.
(Spotting) Spotter may stand in front of gymnast on the side of beam to give aid if needed.

2.    Squat On Mount-(Cues) May use a short running approach or stand next to beam in a side stand front position, place hands shoulder width apart on top of beam, jump upward lifting hips high and allowing shoulders to come forward of the hands as the feet are placed on the beam between the hands with the knees flexed.
(Spotting) Spotter stands on opposite side of beam facing gymnast and grasping gymnast's upper arms; as gymnast jumps upward, aid her balance as necessary.

3.    Forward Roll-(Cues) From a cross stand front at the end of the beam place the hands with the thumbs on top of the beam and at the very end of the beam; using a 2 foot takeoff, lift hips high overhead while tucking the head and letting the body roll on to the beam in a controlled manner, keep back rounded during the roll; at the end of the roll the gymnast may walkout to a standing position or may roll to a sitting straddle position.
(Spotting) Spotter stands near end of beam to the side facing the gymnast; as the gymnast lifts her hips overhead, spotter reaches for the hips and grasps them with a hand on each side to support them during the rolling action and to keep the gymnast on the beam.

4.    Front Scale-(Cues) From standing position lean forward at the waist until the trunk is parallel with the beam; as trunk leans, nonsupporting leg is extended backward and lifted upwards as far as the gymnast's flexibility allows.
(Spotting) Spotter stands along side of beam with hand outstretched for gymnast to grasp if necessary.

5.    Tuck Jump-(Cues) Gymnast flexes knees and jumps upward from both feet, she lifts the knees to her chest at the height of the jump, flex knees upon landing to land softly.
(Spotting) Spotter stands at side with her hand outstretched for gymnast to if necessary.

6.    Full Turn-(Cues) Gymnast initiates turn by swinging the free leg in the direction of the turn leg, to the right if right leg is the supporting leg; knee of swinging leg is bent during the turning motion; full turn is executed on the ball of the supporting leg and foot; body must be completely extended throughout the turn; arms may be extended overhead or held in lower positions for added style and balance.
(Spotting) Two spotters stand one on each side of the beam with hands outstretched for gymnast to grasp if necessary.

7.    English Handstand-(Cues) Stand facing the length of the beam; bend forward placing the hands on the beam with the thumbs on top and fingers down the sides; kick into a handstand position while maintaining complete stretch in the elbows, shoulders, trunk, and legs.
(Spotting) One spotter supports gymnast at her elbow and shoulder while a second spotter supports the hips; if gymnast rolls out, second spotter continues to support the hips.

8.     Cartwheel-(Cues) for cartwheel to the left, left foot is forward and held parallel with the beam while arms are stretched overhead, gymnast bends and places the hands one at a time in the side handstand position while raising the right leg upward followed by the left leg to pass through a straddled side handstand position; execute a 1/4 turn with the hips and reach for the beam with the right foot, place the foot close to the right hand on the beam, push off the beam with the right hand and reach with the left foot toward the beam; end in a standing position facing the direction of the starting position.
(Spotting) Spotter stands on backside of gymnast and places near hand on gymnast's near hip; as the gymnast kicks into the handstand position, the spotter grasps the other hip and continues to support the gymnast at each hip to the ending position.

Vault Exercises

1.    Squat On, Jump Off-(Cues) Squat on near end, step to the far end and use arms to help lift body into the air, land softly.
(Spotting) Spotter should be alert to preventing the vaulter from falling backward into the horse; step in behind vaulter on landing and spot at vaulter's hips.

2.    Squat On, Squat Off-(Cues) Squat on near end, reach for the other end of the horse with both hands, place hands on the far edge of the horse, keep head up, push off the horse with the feet, while lifting hips high and tucking the knees to the chest, tucked legs pass behind arms as the hands push off the horse, land in a cross stand rear.
(Spotting) Two spotters one on each side of the dismount end, as the vaulter places her hands on the end of the horse, the spotters grasp the wrist and upper arm of the vaulter.

3.    Straddle Through-(Cues) Vaulter approaches the horse with good speed, must execute a good blocking action off the board to achieve necessary lift, the hands reach for the far end of the horse while the hips are lifted high; as the hands are placed on the far end of the horse, the legs begin to straddle and the hands and arms thrust off the horse as the legs straddle through, land in a cross stand position.
(Spotting) Spotter stands on dismount end of horse facing the oncoming vaulter and in a forward, back side; as the vaulter's hands are placed on the end, the spotter quickly grasps the vaulter's hands upper arms and steps backward with the gymnast during the dismount.

4.    Side Through-(Cues) Longer approach, good rebound off board, place hands side by side on horse while lifting the legs with knees straight to either the right or left side, keep feet together and toes pointed, bring legs through; landing is in a side stand rear.
(Spotting) Spotting technique is the same as for the squat vault except that only one spotter can spot and he should stand on the side to which the legs are not swung and grasp the vaulter's wrist and upper arm on that side with the appropriate hand positions.

5.    Handspring-(Cues) Good approach run, takeoff with good blocking action on the board, reach for the horse with the hands as the hips rotate upward, as the hands touch the horse, the hips should still be rising and rotating forward, the elbows remain straight during contact with the horse as the shoulders and hands provide the popping action that lifts the vaulter into the afterflight, keep the head in alignment with the body and the arms trailing, stretch the entire body toward the landing and do not arch the back and let the legs drop the soon.
(Spotting) Spotter on take off side of the horse lifts the vaulter wit hone hand on the front of the hips and the other lifts on the vaulter's thigh as he rebounds from the takeoff board, two spotters on the landing side grasp the vaulter's back with their other hand, spotters must move with the vaulter to the landing and support him the entire distance.
