Instant Activities are designed to get the class off to an energetic
and fun filled start. Unlike with conventional ways of teaching physical
education classes, which have the students coming in and sitting down so
roll can be taken, instant activities feed the children's need to be active.
The last thing students want to do when they get to physical education
class is sit. They come to class ready to move! They have been sitting
all day in normal classroom situations and they are eager to get started.
This is where instant activities become valuable.
Instant activities use the students excitement and enthusiasm to get
the class of to a great start. After arriving to class, the students
proceed to the gym to see what IA they are going to be performing that
day. When the IA is over, the children's need to be active has been
met and they are now ready to listen to the teacher to get ready for the
day's lesson.
IA's last for approximately two to four minutes and are usually vigorous
enough to get the students heart rate up and blood flowing. Instant activities
are a great chance for students to socialize with one another while still
practicing a developmentally appropriate activity. This is also a
good chance for teachers to take roll and do any necessary paperwork that
normally takes up valuable class time.
