Skills Techniques Drills
| Scarves | -Practice throwing up scarf in the air.
-When tossing the scarves, pinch with pointer finger and thumb and flick wrist backwards towards the ceiling and let go. -When catching the scarves, pinch with same fingers and toss up again. -Try and toss right in front of you in an upward toss about eye level. -When using 3 scarves pinch the third scarf with your pinkie finger against your hand. -Create an "X" figure while tossing the scarves up. |
-Practice throwing the scarves up in the air and land
-Toss scarves up from under leg. -See how many you can toss up in the air and catch. -See how low to the ground that you can catch the scarves -Create the crisscross apple sauce while tossing three scarves in the air and catching them all. -Continue tossing scarves and catching them for 15 times. |
| Beanbags | -Start out with two beanbags and practice the X figure.
-Hold the beanbags in your hands an toss up in the air to about eye level. -Let them drop the first few times to allow time to get used to the toss. -When using three beanbags, have two in one hand and one in the other. The hand with two beanbags, have one in the palm of your hand and the other in the fingers. -Toss from the hand with two beanbags first. -As the beanbag is in the air, toss the second beanbag from your other hand. -During this time you will catch the first beanbag and toss up the third one within a small amount of time. Only toss them each up once and catch them. -Make sure that your feet are shoulder width apart and try and stay in the same place and direction. It is not good to be moving around while juggling. -Continue this pattern until feel comfortable. Then try tossing them up six times and so forth. |
-Toss the beanbags up and let hit ground. Try to get them
to land on the opposite side of the body.
-Toss them up each once and try to catch them all. Repeat until successful. -Start juggling them multiple times. |
| Tennis Balls | -Juggling tennis balls is similar to beanbags accept that they don't give as much and are harder to hold onto. Continue tossing them in the X formation. | -Try to juggle them for (50) times |
| Tricks | Bouncing off the wall-
-Juggle toward the wall. Make sure that you are only about three feet away at first. -Instead of flicking wrist completely upward, flick them slightly forward to hit the wall. -It is the same as in the air accept for that the ball will come back a little faster and harder. Need to have quick hands. Bouncing on the floor-

Spotting |
Spotting
-Check to make sure that the seat goes up to the riders waist. -Do not get on the unicycle without permission. -Always have two spotters with you. -Spotters should be on both sides of you with arm out for support. -Spotters to do not hold onto the riders at all. Only the riders can hold onto the spotters. -If they need more support have the riders hold onto the spotters shoulders. Make sure you have enough room so that you will not fall or run into any objects, walls or people. -Spotter do not go and faster or slower than the rider. They stay right on the side of the rider. -The rider should be deciding speed and direction. |
Have the students practice getting on and off the unicycle with support of spotters. (only when they know how to get on and off correctly) |
| Getting on/off | On
-First hold the unicycle backwards towards you. -Then put the seat between your legs and your takeoff foot on the peddle. -The peddle should be back toward you and at the halfway point. (not all the way toward the floor or ceiling). -One hand should be holding onto the seat of the unicycle. Hold onto it until you are up. (This hand should be on the opposite side of your lead leg). -Put pressure on that peddle, lean forward to the point of where you are on top (do not over push or you will fall on your face). Use your spotters as you go up for support. -Bring your other foot up and put it onto the other peddle. -Now put your other hand on the other spotter for support. -Balance yourself out by using good body position. Off
|
Practice getting on and off of the unicycle. Remember to spot you riders. |
| Body Position | When getting onto the unicycle make sure you:
-Straighten your back up and sit tall. -Focus your eyes on a point in front of you (Can put spots on the wall to have students focus on). -Put your arms out straight on your spotters for better balance. -Push your hips forward. (Not too far because you will fall forward). |
Practice balancing and keeping still for five seconds and then get off of the cycle. |
| Peddling | -When peddling make sure that you keep a good body position otherwise
you will loose your balance and may fall off.
-Push forward with front foot and only switch your feet position. (front foot is now in back and vise versa). -Stop after you get your feet in new position. -Need to keep the body position while moving. Spotter walks with rider. -When you have the half peddle down with good balance, then you can move onto the full cycle of one rotation. Take it slow there is no racing going on. -Repeat cycle until have the one cycle down. |
Practice half rotations and full rotations. |
| Unicycle with wall | -When you have your rotations down well and do not need spotters
as much we can move you to the wall.
-Go next to the wall and face the direction that your lead foot is on the inside of the wall. -Get onto the unicycle the same way. (you may need one spotter at first to get used to getting on by the wall) -Have the wall about arms length away. -Practice just doing a half rotation until comfortable. -Keep practicing until you can ride a little ways (5 ft) without stopping. -Another approach is having your back to the wall and pushing off and trying to peddle before you fall off. In this case you would fall forward and grab onto you seat. This gives you practice at the feeling of not having help. Make sure you have a lot of room where you cannot get hurt. (Only allow students to do this if you know their capability. You should spot this one). |
Practice riding by yourself using the wall for balance. |
