Scoring& Rules
Lesson Objective:
Student will be able to demonstrate correct technique
in scoring and following the proper rules of the game of bowling
*Scoring*
Ten frames is a game.
There are two balls to a frame
to knock down all the pins.
*A strike: knocking down all
the pins with the first ball delivered in any frame. A strike
is marked with an X to indicate a credit of 10 pins. To strike earns
a bonus of all pins knocked down by the next two balls in the next frame
or frames.
*A spare: knocking down all
the pins down with two balls. A spare is marked with a / (backslash)
as shown to indicate a credit of 10 pins. A spare earns a bonus of the
pins knocked down by the next ball in the following frame.
*A split: knocking down some
pins with the first ball in such a way that some of them are left standing
with space between them.
-
A split is marked with a circle as
shown (at left).
*A split becomes a spare when the remaining
pins are knocked down with the second ball. A / (backslash) is drawn
as shown.
*An error occurs when all the pins
are not knocked down with two balls. A ? is marked as shown.
An exception to the error : when a split is left after the first ball,
it is marked as a split, and not as an error.
*Rules*
*Legal Pinfall:
-
every ball delivered by the bowler
counts unless it is declared a dead ball.
-
pins knocked down by another pin or
pins rebounding from the side partition or rear cushion are counted as
pins down.
-
before delivering the ball, each player
must determine if the set-up is correct.
-
pins knocked down by a fair ball
that remain lying on the alley bed or in the gutters, or that lean so as
to touch kickbacks or side partitions, are termed dead-wood. They
are counted as pins down and are removed before the next ball is bowled.
*Illegal Pinfall:
When any of the following incidents
occurs the ball counts as a ball rolled, but pins knocked down do not count:
-
when pins are knocked down or displaced
by a ball that leaves the alley before reaching the pins
-
when a ball rebounds from the rear
cushion
-
when a standing pin falls because of
removal of deadwood or is knocked down by a pinsetter; it must be replaced
on the pin spot marked on the pin deck where it orginally stood before
delivery of the ball
-
when pins that are bowled off the alley
bed rebound & remain standing on the alley bed.
-
when a foul is committed in delivery
the ball
*Dead Ball
A ball shall be declared dead if
any of the following circumstances occurs, in which case the ball shall
not count.
-
if after the player delivers his ball
attention is immediately called to the fact that one or more pins were
missing from the set-up.
-
when a pinspotter removes or interferes
with any pin or pins before they stop rolling or before the ball reaches
the pins
-
when a player bowls on the wrong alley
or out of turn
-
when the player is interferred with
by any person or a moving object as the ball is being delivered and before
delivery is completed
-
when any pins at which he is bowling
are moved or knocked down in any manner as the ball is being delivered
and before the ball reaches the pins
-
when a player's ball comes in contact
with any foreign objects
*Foul*
A foul is committed whenever the
foot, hand, or any part of the body touches the alley bed, equipment, or
any part of the building such as a wall.
*Scoring*
See above
*Etiquette*
-
appropriate behavior as you wait for
your turn and finally take it
-
always be ready to take your turn
-
always be properly equipped for bowling
The code of etiquette is consideration
of others. If thoughtfulness and common sense guide the bowler's
conduct, he is observing the rules of etiquette.
