Lesson
6
Refine Pendulum Swing & Takeaway
Lesson Objective: Students
will be able to demonstrate the takeaway movement, that will then help
them in the refinement of the pendulum swing.
Instant Activity: *Builders
& Bulldozers
Lesson:
1. Review
Pendulum
2. Introduce
Takeaway
3. Pendulum
swing & takeaway drills
4. Keys
to success for pendulum swing and takeaway
-
body stable before movement
-
ball falls into swing
-
balance arm moves with ball's fall
-
final balance arm position on count
'two'
-
body stable throughout
Pendulum swing & takeaway drills:
1. Assisted takeaway coordination
*group management
-
best done with a pair of students per
lane
-
make sure partner supports the weight
of the ball while the bowler is in the extension setup position
-
this drill is performed in a stationary
position, using just the pendulum swing.
*instructions
-
the goal of the drill is to coordinate
the timing of the pendulum swing with the takeaway.
-
assume your extension setup position,
with your partner supporting the weight of the ball. Place your balance
hand underneath your bowling hand. Stand erect in preparation for
the ball to fall into the swing
-
count your swing cadence to yourself.
When ready say 'one'.
-
When partners hear 'one', continue
to count and let the ball fall into the swing. As your ball begins its
fall, remember to point your balance arm out, down, and back. Close
your eyes and fell the relationship of timing between the movement of the
ball falling into the swing and your balance arm moving into its proper
position. Always match the speed of the takeaway to the ball's falling
speed.
-
When partner says 'two' your balance
arm should be in its final position, and should remain there throughout
the remainder of the cadence.
*success goal
-
10 consecutive coordinated swings and
takeaways.
*decrease difficulty
-
reduce success goal to 6 or 8
-
have student close eyes to meet the
success goal
*increase difficulty
-
have student use full delivery (eyes
open) while partner observes timing.
2. 300 Drill
*group management
-
this drill works well with a partner's
evaluation
-
remind students to focus on delivery
execution instead of the actual number of pins knocked down
-
refresh students on etiquette rules
*instructions
-
purposes of this drill are to incorporate
the timing of your pendulum swing and takeaway into your full delivery
and to practice scoring a game. Continue to use your strike-targeting
techniques, and don't worry about how many pins are actually knocked down.
-
with a partner, bowl a game according
to the following rules: on first delivery, if partner says you demonstrated
correct timing of your pendulum swing and takeaway arm, then you get a
strike. If not, you get 9 points. On your second delivery,
if you execute correctly, you get a spare. If not, mark a miss.
-
alternate bowling one frame (two balls)
with your partner, for a total of 10 frames. Tally your points (not
pins) to get as close as possible to a perfect '300' game.
*success goal
-
bowl a game and get 225 out of 300
possible points.
*decrease difficulty
*increase difficulty
-
increase success goal to 250 points
-
have student bowl two games to demonstrate
consistency in meeting the success goal.
