Lesson
5
Strike Targeting
Lesson Objective: Students
will be able to apply what they have learned about straight and hook balls
to making strikes.
Instant Activity: *Shape
Toss
Lesson:
1. Review
all that has been learned thus far
2. Special
emphasis on how to straight and hook balls
3. Introduce
Strike targeting
4. Strike
targeting drills
5. Keys
to success for strike targeting
-
choose target point
-
choose touchdown point
-
take appropriate setup location
-
feet parallel with target line
-
focus eyes on visual target
-
execute well
-
analyze the results
-
adjust target line
-
repeat execution
Strike Targeting Drills:
1. Placement Distance Determination
*group management
-
two students work together per lane
-
partner needs to stay on either side
of bowler at the foul line
*equipment
-
12-inch rulers, 1 per student pair
*instructions
-
take a delivery position at the foul
line with your ball dangling to your swingside.
-
sit even lower than normal until the
ball touches the approach. Maintain proper posture.
-
partners use a ruler to measure the
distance between the inner edge of the sliding foot and the center of the
ball touching the approach. Repeat five times
-
average the five measurements and you
have your own placement distance in inches.
*success goal
-
determine personal placement distance
in boards after 5 measurements
2. Straight Ball Strike Targeting
*group management
-
two students per lane: One bowls while
the other observes and records
-
during this drill, let student talk
to partner as directed, but discourage visiting
*equipment
-
1 roll of dark tape, optional
*instructions
-
bowl 10 first-ball deliveries using
an 8 to 10 target line
-
partners, you will be recording information
but not the number of pins knocked down. Prepare your scoresheet.
-
set up on the same board every time.
Be sure to tell your partner what board this is because it will be recorded
as your 'setup' location. After you roll the ball, look at your sliding
toe. The first whole board to the inside of that foot is your 'slide
location'. After each ball, tell your partner what board it is.
-
the partners job is to watch for and
record the board over which the ball passed when it passed the arrows (target
area board), and the board over which it rolled when it hit the pins (impact
board). Don't watch the bowler's form. Give the bowler a point
whenever an entry matches the ideal location as described in your book.
*success goal
-
complete 3 trial games, rating slide
location, target area, impact board, and total points.
*decrease difficulty
-
reduce success goal
-
move target closer by putting a piece
of dark tape on the target area board. Use 2-foot increments until
student is regularly hitting target area board.
*increase difficulty
