Lesson

Introduction
Setup/Stance
Pendulum Swing
Lesson Objectives:
Students
will be able to demonstrate setup/stance and practice the pendulum swing
Instant Activity:
*Line Monsters
Handout: Glossary
words to be studied by students>pop quiz to be given during unit
Lesson:
1. Provide
students with brief overview of bowling
2. Introduce
proper setup/stance
3. Setup/stance
drills
4.
Keys to success for setup/stance
-
alert, standing tall
-
squared feet, hips, & shoulders
-
back upright, head high
-
ball in line w/ bowling arm
5.
Introduce pendulum swing
6.
Pendulum drills
7.
Keys to success for pendulum swing
-
body squared & stable
-
body falls into swing
-
body stable as ball swings
-
body stable as ball stops
Setup/Stance Drills:
1. Balance Awareness:
*group management:
-
ratio of one student observer to one
performer is preferred. This drill should be performed on the approach.
The observer can stand in front or to the side of the performer, depending
on the direction of the performer's lean.
*instructions:
-
focus attention on the quality of your
body balance by comparing off-balance body positions(either too far forward
or sideward) to the vertical.
-
first, from the completed setup position,
lean foward slowly, shifting your weight to the balls of your feet.
Lean foward just enough to feel that you are about to lose your balance.
Return to the initial upright position.
-
next lean to the swingside, paying
attention to the weight distribution on your feet. Lean swingside
just enough to feel you sliding (balance side) foot lift off the approach.
Return to upright position.
-
repeat both types of leans, alternating
off-balance, then in-balance, with your eyes open and closed. Concentrate
on finding the feeling of balance-neither too far foward nor backward, and
neither too far to the swingside nor to the non-swingside.
*goal:
-
20 lean comparisons
-
with eyes open>5 comparisons of foward
leans, balance; 5 comparisons of swingside leans, balance
-
with eyes closed>5 comparisons of foward
leans, balance; 5 comparisons of swingside leans, balance
*decrease difficulty:
-
allow use of lighter ball
*increase difficulty:
-
do more sequences with eyes closed
Pendulum Drills:
1. Free swing cadence
*group management:
-
students in pairs face-to-face, one
partner starting and stopping the other's swing. Remind students
to swing only in line with the approach, never at an angle to it.
They should always check behind them before swinging the balls. Remind
them to keep their faces and hands clear of the swings, and to stop the
swings only with their hands on the sides of the balls.
-
objectives are to develop a feel for
proper swing alignment and to determine the cadence that sets delivery
timing
-
check students ball grip and ball fit-if
too heavy or too light, replace with better suited ball to the student.
*instructions:
-
take a normal setup position with your
partner on the approach facing you and about 3 feet away
-
push you ball straight out in front
of your shoulder and into your partner's hands
-
drop your balance arm to your side,
giving the ball's weight to your partner. You are now in the extension
setup position.
-
when they are ready, close your eyes
and say 'one'
-
partners, let the ball drop into its
swing when you hear 'one'
-
do not slow down or speed up the ball.
Let the gravity do the work.
-
partners, say 'two' when the ball passes
the bowler's swingside leg
-
say 'three' when the ball is at the
top of the backswing
-
say 'four' when the ball passes the
swingside leg again
*goal:
-
10 consecutive free-pendulum swings
*decrease difficulty:
-
have student do more free swings with
eyes closed
-
allow use of lighter ball
*increase difficulty:
-
let student alternately close, then
open eyes
