* Boating Safety
All across the country boating is growing each year as individuals and families discover the fun and enjoyment of water sports. Until now, however, very little knowledge has been acquired prior to actually getting underway and understanding the safety aspects involved. The intent of this curriculum is to lay out the basics of boating to the students in order to make their water activities fun and safe.
Boating has a language of its own and just like any other language which is foreign it requires practice and repetitious use to master. Go to Lesson Plans Home Page For More Information* Water-skiing
Water Skiing is an exciting and challenging sport. Fast becoming one of the most popular sports in the nation, water-skiing has certain aspects of danger. It is essential that my students will have an understanding of water-skiing in order to help eliminate many of these risks. To begin with, water-skiing is a team sport. The team players are the skier, the boat driver, and an observer to keep an eye on the skier and relay the messages to the driver. Many states require that there be a water skier observer and often there are age restrictions. The boat should also be clear of other boats, docks, and obstacles. Since the tow rope should be at least 75 feet long remember to keep the skier at least twice that distance from potentially dangerous obstacles.
The water skier should be able to communicate to the boat with hand signals. A clear understanding in advance of the desires of the skier will lead to a safer sport. Try not to think for the skier, let him or her direct the actions of the boat. Go to Lesson Plans Page For More Information* Wake Boarding
Wake Boarding much like water skiing is a fun and exciting sport. It involves many of the same safety features as water skiing. The students will be able to understand the equipment guidelines and the basic fundamentals of wake boarding. They will be able to practice their skills both on land and in the pool, they will also be exposed to various tricks that can be performed with a wake board. Boat Safety and water sports combines physical and mental skills that will serve the students well throughout their lives. This individual sport in actuality is a team sport which involves many key roles and can provide a strong foundation of team work and responsibility. Water sports take place all over the world throughout the entire year and are open for all skill levels. They are truly life time sports which can be fun and safe if participators are taught the proper safety and technique instructions and guidelines. Water sports allow the participants to move on their own pace and do not have to emphasize competition and winning. There is room for high levels of participation due to the demand for many roles ~ the driver, the skier, the observer, etc. Participation and Safety are both factors which will be stressed in this unit. This curriculum will get students into outdoor settings and challenge them both physically and mentally.Student Learning Objectives:
