As the world around us changes, so do our bodies. Fitness/exercise and healthy habits are becoming more and more important to keeping the outer and inner body healthy. This course will give students another type of activity to use as an avenue to maintain an active lifestyle. This unit, Bicycle Touring, will combine recently acquired fitness conditioning, bicycling, and day camping to give you a new twist to make a new activity. Bike Touring is "a form of self-propelled travel and brings the participant into close contact with the nature world, in both it's gentle and harsh moods." (Bridge, 1979) This unit will develop advanced bicycling skills, fitness, day camping, as well as create cooperation between students.
Through the extensive use of class discussions, drills, peer evaluation, teacher observations, and on-the-road situations, students will become actively involved in shaping the course. Ultimately, it is hoped that students will gain a greater understanding of the importance of staying active and one of the recreational activities that can allow for enjoyment as well as life-long fitness.
Specific Student Objectives Include:
1. Discussing the role of activity/fitness
in one’s life, and the importance of having varied activities to engage
in.
2. Observing peers and evaluating performances/scenerios.
3. Recognition of the essential skills
involved in Bicycle Touring .
4. Performance of the essential skills.
5. Accrue knowledge of the road and laws.
6. Functioning as part of team/pack.
Class Participation/Attendance:
Students are urged to ask questions, express opinions, reveal facts, and challenge material presented. These types of participation are vital tools to the learning process. Therefore, the quality of voluntary participation significantly impacts final grades.
ALL unexcused absences will serve to lower the student’s final grade.
Meeting Times: Class begins no later than 5 minutes past the final bell (2:00 p.m.), and ends no earlier than 45 minutes past the hour. Adequate time is provided for showering and changing. There will be one ride required on a Saturday. There are three weekends available to participate: May 22. 29, or June 5th. Failure to participate in the weekend ride (without extreme circumstances) will result in a failing grade for the class.
