backpacking.

Students will have knowledge
about conditioning the body for backpacking.

Students will be able identify
various exercises that can be used to prepare their
physical fitness.

Lesson Activity:
I. Explain and review the handout "Getting in Shape for the Trail."
II. Take a field trip to the
local
gym to see the types of equipment used for
conditioning your body.
A. Explain
and demonstrate the stair-steppers, elliptical trainers and climbing
machines
for the students.
B. Explain one lift for each of the muscle groups.
A. Legs- Squats
B. Biceps- Dumbbell curls
C. Triceps- Extensions
D. Shoulder- Shoulder press
E. Chest- Bench Press
Review:
-Gather
the students around instructor and ask them to identify a lift for each
of
5 muscle
groups.
-Ask
students to identify 5 main reasons for "Getting in Shpae for the Trail."
Assessment:
-Do
students understand why we need to condition our body before
backpacking?
Ask the students to name 5 reasons why we need to condition our body.
-Can students identify the three machines used at the gym for conditioning?
Ask
the students to identify the machines when observing them in the gym.
