How to Pack a Backpack
Objective:
Students will acquire the skills
and knowledge to properly pack a backpack.
Skill:
Students will understand how
to place equpiment correctly in a backpack.
Equipment:
Instant Activity: Tent
pitching
Lesson Activity:
I. Each student will get a backpack
(internal or external) and one of each of the equipment listed above. They
will also
find a partner at this time in their own personal space in the gymnasium.
II. Explain where the equipment needs to be placed in the backpack.
A. Explain and show the difference between internal and external frame backpacks.
B. Provide
them with a handout on how to properly
place equipment in external and internal frame
backpacks.
C. Provide them with another handout on packing tips for both pack styles.
D. Students
will pack their own backpack with the appropriate equipment that matches
their
trip
plans and the expected weather conditions. (They will hypothetically decide
their plans and
weather
conditions)
1. Partner will have a checklist
with all the equipment that should be in the backpack.
2. Each student will pack their own backpack with their equipment.
3. Partners will take turns unpacking their own backpack while their partner
observes them while
using the checklist.
4. Students will then repack their backpack correctly and they will fix
anything that their partner
thought was packed incorrectly.
E. Students will then learn how to hoist the loaded backpack correctly.
1. Students will follow a task card.
F.
After correctly hoisting their backpack, each student will walk up and
down a flight of stairs to
check for comfort and stability of their hoisted backpack and they will
also check their balance.
Review:
-Instructor
will ask all of the students to raise their hand and state one piece of
equipment that they
should pack in their backpack.
-Instructor will also ask a student to explain how to hoist a backpack using the steps on the task card.
-Instructor
will ask several students to state some of the packing tips that were stated
on the
handout.
Assessment:
-Students will be assessed by their partner when packing their backpack by using the checklist.
-Students will also be assessed on their task card for hoisting their backpack.
