Medicare and Your CWU Insurance Programs

Part A: Hospital Benefits
Enroll at 65
Coordinates with state insurance coverage for both active employees and retirees
Covers
  • Hospitalization
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Care
  • Some Home Health Care
  • Hospice Care
Enrollment and Premiums
  • Automatically enrolled at age 65
  • Participation is free
  • Participation does not change the premiums
    or coverage for your state insurance
Part B: Doctors Visits and Ambulance
Enroll ONLY When Both 65 and Retired
Covers
  • Physician Services
  • Laboratory Services
  • Some Home Health Care
  • Ambulance Rides
  • Some Outpatient Treatment













Enrollment and Premiums
  • 2008 premium based on income
    *$96.40/month if income under $82,000
  • Premium increases annually
  • Effect on state insurance premiums
    • Employees - No change
    • Retirees - Reduces rates
  • Enroll when you are both 65 and not covered by yours or your
    spouse's active employer insurance
  • Upon enrollment as a retiree age 65 or over, pay premium
    with no increased benefit, but monthly premium for state
    insurance is reduced (The state's plan requires retirees over 65 to enroll!)
  • Those who enroll past their 65th birthday who did NOT
    have active employee coverage are charged 10% higher
    premiums for each year they delayed enrollment. May
    delay enrollment without paying higher premium if
    covered by yours or spouse's active employee coverage.

Part C: Managed Care
Do Not Enroll If Covered by Active or Retiree CWU Insurance
Not widely used and not available in Eastern Washington
Part D: Prescription Drug Program
Do Not Enroll If Covered by Active or Retiree CWU Insurance
Covers
  • Only used if prescription drugs not provided under current plan
  • Must carefully select private/independent provider








Enrollment and Premiums
  • Enroll ONLY when you are both 65 and do not have
    other prescription drug coverage
  • Penalty for late enrollment - ONLY if you did not have
    other coverage deemed "at least as good as" Part D
    (Group Health & Uniform are "at least as good as" Part D)
  • The penalty is 1% higher premiums for every month
    enrollment is delayed
  • You select a plan based on the drugs they cover and
    the pharmacies they use

Medicare enrollment eligibility is three months before the month you turn 65 until three months after you turn 65.

The Medicare open enrollment period is November 15 through December 31 of each year.
