Living Learning Communities"Two hundred twenty-three students are participating in Living Learning Communities this year. These outstanding new student programs have a great impact on our goal of providing for an outstanding academic and student life at CWU. Significantly, they also enhance retention of students."
AviationStudents involved with this program must be accepted into the Aviation Sciences Program. Sutents take a series of classes together including University 101. Some examples of programs that students have been involved with have included attendance at the Museum of Flight, study sessions and FAA review, and community service projects with children at the local airport.Casa LatinaCasa Latina is a multicultural LLC open to all students who share an interest in Latina/o heritage and culture. Casa Latina will offer a common academic experience through a variety of social and cultural events, mentoring and support programs, and community outreach activities. Join us in honoring Latina/o heritage as we celebrate diversity and transform the Central experience.EducationStudents anticipating a career in education or in a field of working with children or youth are eligible. Students will be enrolled in a series of classes with their peers, including University 101. These classes will help prepare students for entrance into the Education program. Programs that students have been involved with have included discussions with various teachers, sessions on teacher education preparation, community service in the local schools including a pen pal program, and other opportunities within the public schools.International HouseStudents interested in becoming more involved with world issues are encouraged to participate in activities surrounding our global society. There are many opportunities for students to interact with other from international countries. Students involved in this program will have the opportunity to learn more about studying abroad and different cultural perspectives, and will gain cross-cultural living experience. Previous programs have included trips to the Seattle International District, classic film series, meeting the former President of Ireland (Mary Robinson), and cultural meal programs. White primarily an upper-class living experience, freshman are eligible when space allows.Leadership HouseStudents interested in connecting with university leadership positions and learning about academic opportunities surrounding leadership are encouraged to participate. This program allows freshmen students to be paired with an upper-class mentor to learn more about leadership involvement on campus. The Center for Excellence and Leadership and University Housing and New Student Programs provide students with the opportunity to further their leadership skills. Students involved in this program will enroll in a Service Learning/Civic Engagement class that promotes the ideas of service learning and contributions to the local community. Programs that students have been involved with have included a leadership institute, leadership certification program, and team-building ropes courses. Students will have the opportunity to complete a three-tiered leadership track and add this experience to their leadership transcript. In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply for an Emerging Leaders Course.MusicStudents with a declared or anticipated major/minor in music or who have an interest in music enrichment are eligible. Programs in the past years have included visiting the Spokane Symphony, attending the musical Rent in Seattle, taking special lessons in Taiko (Japanese drumming), and participating in vocal performances on campus.Students For The DreamCWU's newest living learning community, this program is a diverse and inclusive global learning community based on the core values of Martin Luther King's philosophy of the essential dignity and advancement of all human beings. Students participating in this community will enroll in classes together that focus on the history of hip hop, communication, and deepen their understanding of their own culture and the cultures around them.Science Talent Enhancement Program (STEP)Students with an interest or anticipated major/minor in geology, chemistry, biology or physics are eligible. Students participating with the Science Talent Enhancement Program (STEP) explore theme-based scientific issues, gain hands-on experience in modern scientific research, and develop a mentoring relationship with CWU science faculty. Students accepted into and involved with STEP will take a sequence of three general education classes in a small classroom setting. Student programs in this area have included hikes on Mt. Rainier, river-rafting trips, visits to the Seattle Zoo and discussion topics including presentations on Mount St. Helens. Douglas Honors College (DHC) are eligible to live in this LLC. Faculty and students collaborate in creating opportunities of broad exposure in the areas of liberal arts and natural and social sciences. Students will integrate knowledge gained from a wide range of disciplines through critical thinking, writing, and oral communication. Students attend a series of lectures together and continue dialogues in the residence halls in colloquium groups. Interested students should contact the DHC at 509-369-1445. Students must be accepted into DHC to live in this community. |
