New Student Programs Summer Staff 2008

Summer Leader Qualifications:

There are a variety of qualities that a student leader must have. We are looking for students who possess the following:

  • Leadership development potential
  • Ability to work effectively in a group
  • Positive and effective communication skills
  • A desire to work with students, family, faculty, and staff
  • High energy and positive attitude
  • Integrity and enthusiasm
  • Good academic standing (2.3 cumulative GPA)
  • Good disciplinary standing
  • Problem solving and trouble-shooting abilities
  • A sense of humor and fun

Almost all of the students attending Orientation and Wildcat Welcome Weekend will be living in residence halls, so knowledge of the residence hall system is desired. Summer Staff must abide by the "Prescribed Code of Conduct" for students set forth by the Office of Student Affairs and Enrolment Management and NEVER engage in unlawful or unethical behaviors with Orientation/Business Week and/or WWW participants.

Available Positions (Descriptions and responsibilites)

Discover! Orientation leader (OL) The Discover! Orientation Leader (OL) position is an outstanding opportunity for students interested in gaining leadership skills and developing future employment skills. An OL conveys information to new students and their families/guests about CWU’s programs and services. The OL assists with all orientation events and plays a vital role in facilitating the adjustment of new students to the campus and the community. The OL assists with orientation events by leading discussion groups with incoming students and family members, assisting in the preparation of orientation activities and materials, explaining academic opportunities and procedures, acquainting new students with campus services and building locations, aiding in the advisement and registration process and discussing sensitive issues. In addition, the OL will attend all Spring 2008 and Summer 2008 training sessions. Leaders will begin summer training on Friday, June 20th and finish work on Friday, July 18th (dates may change slightly as the schedule is finalized).

Discover! Orientation leader and Business Week Counselor (OL/BWC) The Orientation Leader/Business Week Counselor (OL/BWC) has all the responsibilities of the OL position in addition to assisting with Business Week events by providing supervision to assigned student groups, helping students to abide by the code of conduct of Business Week, facilitating and supervising free time activities, performing nightly bed checks and attending scheduled meetings with Business Week Director, staff, supervisors, and co-counselors. Leaders who are hired to work with Business week will conclude work on Wednesday, July 30th (date may change slightly as the schedule is finalized).

Wildcat Welcome Weekend Leader (WWWL) A Wildcat Welcome Weekend Leader (WWWL) conveys information to new students about the programs and services provided by CWU. The WWWL assists with all activities pertaining to opening weekend. This position requires the applicant to have a high level of energy. For those students who currently hold positions of leadership on campus, this is an excellent opportunity to receive compensation for the work in which you are already involved. Plus, WWWL are permitted to move in to the residence halls early. WWWL will attend all Spring 2008 and Fall 2008 training sessions. WWW leaders will begin training on Thursday, September 18th and work until Monday, September 22nd.

  • Approximately $1500 (less applicable taxes) (June 20, 2008 - July 18, 2008 with July 4th off)

  • An additional per hour salary to work through July 30, 2008
WWW Leaders are remunerated:
  • $168 stipend

  • Early check in into the residence halls

Application Process:

  • Applications are available in Barto and Button Housing Offices beginningFebruary 4, 2008.
  • The application, applicant questions, and two reference letters are due in the Barto Housing Office no later than 4:00pm on Friday, February 29, 2008.
  • Interviews will be conducted during the week of March 3, 2008. Applicants will sign up for an interview day and time when they turn in their application at the Barto Housing Office.
  • There is a mandatory Spring training session for Discover! Orientation Leaders, Business Week Counselors, and WWW Leaders. This date will be announced at a later time.
