English Graduate Assistantships
Approximately two-thirds of our full-time graduate students hold Graduate Assistantships, the
majority in the English Department and the remainder in the Writing Center, UESL Center, Library, and a few other
campus programs. Graduate assistants receive a stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance. For current
compensation information, download a Graduate Studies Brochure Insert.
We offer up to 17 Assistantships in the English Department to first- and second-year students
on a competitive basis each year. We are committed to supporting our Graduate Assistants through two years of the
program. Graduate Assistants are chosen primarily on the strength of their application packets with an emphasis on
the writing sample, cumulative GPA, recommendations, and GRE/TOEFL scores. Please click for more information.
Graduate assistants in the English Department teach English 101 (English Composition) and
must enroll in English 510 (Practical Applications in Composition) and English 513 (Teaching English Composition).
You will find these courses especially helpful if you have not taught composition in the past.
After graduation, you may apply to be considered as an adjunct if the department is seeking
teachers.

February 15 as the priority deadline for Assistantship applications. To download an application,
