Gender Programs
MONTHLY
- Leaders in Gender Education
In addition to the Center for Student Empowerment's annual traditional gender programming, we often bring in leaders and innovators in gender eduacation. Past presenters we have brought to campus include Gloria Steinem, Chuck D and MC Lyte, Consuelo Castillo Kickbush, Carol J. Adams, Kari Wuhrer, Don McPherson, Yung-Soo Lee, and many more!
- Man Up!
Man Up! is a an opportunity for men to gather and share experiences while becoming empowered and motivated to be the authority of their own lives. These programs allow men to explore a variety of issues surrounding them, such as health concerns and lifestyle.
- Campus/Community Gender Education Workshops
The Center for Student Empowerment offers four different gender education programs that can be customized for particular groups or organizations. Our staff visits residence halls, classrooms, and businesses to deliver dynamic programming which encourages critical thinking and group discussions about the various componants of gender.
FALL
- National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Center for Student Empowerment educates and informs students about domestic violence through various programs during this month.
- Wildcat Welcome Weekend
During this weekend, we bring programs such as "Pop Culture, Sex & Scandal" to students to raise awareness about gender relations, life skills, values, and social constructs so that students can be productive in society.
- Six Week Experience
This presentation is given to CWU residence halls in the first weeks of fall quarter to raise awareness about gender issues, relationships, and personal choices.
- Gender Symposium
Gender Symposium is an event aimed at exposing gender realities and educating students about various perspectives of gender from different points of view.
WINTER
- MANuary
January is MANuary! MANuary explores men's issues in detail through several programs, speakers and events, with an emphasis on explorering what it is to "be a man" and how to be "the whole man".
- Women's History Month
March is Women's History Month. During this month, the Center for Student Empowerment provides insight into the successes of women in history and where women are today.
- Women's Achievement Celebration
Celebrate local women and men who have succeeded as leaders and contributed to the success of women in our community. This special evening of recognition includes a catered dinner.
- LUNAFEST
LUNAFEST is a national traveling festival of short films by...for...about women. Each ticket sold raises money for Breast Cancer Fund and local nonprofit organizations. LUNAFEST films are pulled from the top festivals across the nation .
- National Girls and Women in Sports Day
National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is a program celebrated in all 50 states that acknowledges the past and recognize current sports achievements,
the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle
for equality and access for women in sports.
SPRING
- Equal Pay Day
This day, observed on a Tuesday in April, symbolizes how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. (Tuesday is the day on which women's wages catch up to men's wages from the previous week). Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same among of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color.
- Women Rock!
Women Rock is a spring concert series that celebrates local women musicians, especially CWU students, faculty, and staff.
