Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, Yangsi Rinpoche entered Sera Je Monastery in South India, where he earned the highest degree of Geshe Lharampa. While having the full training of a Tibetan scholar, Rinpoche uses Western metaphors and demonstrates an appreciation for the Western mind in presentations accessible to the audiences less familiar with Tibet and Buddhism. His deep knowledge of the traditional teachings and his ability to elucidate them in contemporary language provide a unique opportunity for the audience to intuit the modern day relevance of this remote culture cloistered behind the highest mountains in the world.
Yangsi Rinpoche is the author of "Practicing the Path," an extremely well written English commentary on the Lamrim Chenmo. The Lamrim Chenmo or "The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment" is one of the brightest jewels in the world's treasury of sacred literature. The author, Tsong-kha-pa (1357-1419), completed this masterpiece in 1402 and it soon became the most renowned work of spiritual practice and philosophy in the world of Tibetan Buddhism. The Lamrim Chenmo is considered the most complete and authoritative commentary on the subject of Lamrim. Passed from Buddha himself, the unbroken oral lineage of Lamrim teachings is a clear, concise, and systematic presentation of all the stages of the path to enlightenment.
"Tibetan Buddhism and the Culture of Happiness" is sponsored by the CWU Diversity Education Center, Asia/Pacific Studies Program, Department of Foreign Languages, Office of International Studies and Programs, Philosophy Department, University Housing and New Student Programs, the William O. Douglas Honors College, and the International Student Association.
