Digital photograph taken to commemorate the event of Sarah Spurgeon's arrival in Ellensburg at the exact same date and time, only 67 years earlier. Because Anna van Suchtelen lives in Utrecht the image was, of course, taken during the day rather then in the wee hours of the morning. |
In January 1, 1939, 4 a.m. — a weather report, Anna van Suchtelen creates an atmosphere inspired by Sarah Spurgeon's first memory upon arriving in fog-enshrouded Ellensburg. Sarah Spurgeon was a beloved and influential professor of drawing and painting in the CWU Department of Art between 1939 and 1971. Through sound, projected text, and visitor participation, van Suchtelen explores the context of Spurgeon's arrival using the changing weather as a metaphor for new beginnings and pivotal events.
Anna van Suchtelen earned an M.A. from the State University of Groningen, the Netherlands and did post-graduate work in the visual arts at the University of California , San Diego . Her site-specific artwork has been exhibited throughout the U.S. , the Netherlands , India , and Japan .
This exhibition is co-sponsored by: College of Arts and Humanities, Educational Technology Center , Department of History, and the Diversity Training Initiative. Spurgeon Gallery is sponsored by Associated Students of CWU and the Department of Art. |
