The following guide describes the archival records housed at the Central Regional Branch from Klickitat County Government and from select Municipal Governments located in Klickitat County. Guide entries are arranged according to the administrative origin of the records they describe, beginning with offices from Klickitat County Government and proceeding to offices from respective municipal governments. Researchers might note that not all government offices or municipalities are represented.

Researchers should note: Date spans represent the first and last dates in a series but do not always denote a continuous chronology. Record series often contain gaps in chronology. When possible, these gaps are noted in the description, but to locate a record for a particular date, researchers should either view the records in person or consult with Archives staff.

| Located in south-central Washington on the northern bank of the Columbia River, Klickitat County originated on December 20, 1859. Rockport was the original county seat, but in 1878 the county seat was moved to its present location at Goldendale, the county's largest city. Klickitat County's first settlers found employment providing wood for Columbia River steamboats and by raising cattle for eastern Washington miners. Present inhabitants are mostly employed in agriculture and service industries. | |||

| The office of County Assessor was created by the Territorial Assembly in 1854, and though abolished in some counties in 1925, was restored to all counties by the State Legislature in 1937. The Assessor's duties include the listing of a valuation on personal and real property for taxation purposes, and transmitting tax rolls to the County Treasurer after review by the Board of Equalization. Records kept by the Assessor include real and personal property tax rolls, open space applications, Board of Equalization minutes, and maps. | |||

| Personal Property Assessment and Tax Rolls include records from both the Assessor and the Treasurer. All records include the names of property holders listed in alphabetical order, the locations and types of property, and the taxes owed and paid. Some Assessor's volumes contain additional property information which includes assessments on livestock, machinery, home furnishings, agricultural and forest products, rolling stock and other vehicles. This additional information is found in volumes for the years: 1879, 1896, 1902, 1907, 1908, 1921, 1925, 1926, 1932, 1933, and 1935 thru 1943. Volumes are missing for the years 1882, 1883, 1886, 1888, 1890, 1913, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919, and 1939. | |||

| The County Auditor was made an elective official when Washington became a territory in 1854 and was assigned the duty of preserving public records concerning the acquisition or transfer of real and personal property, official bonds, land patents, mining claims, water rights, military discharges, and until recently articles of incorporation, vital statistics, and documents relating to livestock. The Auditor also preserves records of the Board of County Commissioners, and acts as supervisor of elections and registrar of voters. | |||

Starting in November of 1915 the certificates are followed by a copy of the personal and statistical particulars showing groms and brides residence, ages, race, marriage status, number of previous marriages, birhplaces, occupations, and names and birthplaces of parents. Also shows signatures of paticipants and date. Starting in 1935 personal and statistical particulars are titled Marriage Returns and are filed as a separate series. | |||

| The State Constitution, which went into effect in 1889, made the County Clerk an elective official, and combined the Private and District Courts into a Superior Court for each county. The Clerk, as functionary of the Superior Court, records and preserves court records, which include criminal, civil, probate, and, in the past, naturalization records.
